How I Came to be a Restaurant Insurance Specialist

The first year on my own—I was only 26 years old, my third year out of college—I made over a hundred grand. (That was a lot of money back in 1990.) I put most of it right back into the business to build it up, so actually I didn’t clear much. After two more years, I was up past six figures and never looked back.

During that time, I was friends with a Greek family in our area. They were good people who owned a successful Mexican franchise. I happened to run into a member of the family who let me know they were unhappy with their present insurance policy. He put me in contact with the older brother who was at that time running the business. We set an appointment and I wrote up the policy.

It was one of those serendipitous moments in life. I realized how much I really liked restaurant people. Restaurant people have dynamic personalities. They shoot straight, give you their word and keep their word. They’re warm and friendly, fun-loving and gregarious. Add the fact that I love eating out and I love good restaurants. It started me thinking: “These are the kind of people I want to do business with all the time.” Once I made that decision, I placed myself under the tutelage of an old-time underwriter and loss-control professional who taught me every nook and cranny of exactly how to properly protect a restaurant owner. Talk about tremendous mentoring—I received it!

Restaurant owners are busy people. They have a demanding business to run. They don’t have time to micro-manage their insurance agent. They are looking for fewer headaches in their life, not more.

At the same time, it was clear to me that restaurants are different, in that I couldn’t insure them as I would insure an apartment building. Restaurant owners encounter problems and situations that are totally unique to that industry. It was also clear to me that there were situations that could very quickly put a restaurant owner completely out of business if he or she was not insured correctly.

Because of these possible dangers I invested the time and effort to become schooled by my loss control/underwriter mentor on every way a restaurant should be insured. I committed myself at that point to give my future clients the very best that I could offer.
